Billy was a friend of mine, we drove the midnight run

And on the planes outside of hay we’d race our rigs for fun

Billy lost some points for driving hours in excess

I saw him roar up, laugh, and say, «And Sal will guide me through»

That night he struck a thunderstorm, his radio went out

He took the long way round in case the scalies were about

The night was dark and raining, it was such a rotten bend

Where Billy missed the turn-off and jack-dived to his end

I gave a bloke a ride that night, I couldn’t see his face

He asked me if I knew the pub in the town just further on

But when I turned to answer him, my passenger was gone

I stopped the truck, I searched the roads, hoped he didn’t fall

But everything was still like there’d been no one there at all

I headed for the town he said and found that one hotel

And there behind the bar was a girl they all called Sal
