I was a soldier who sharpened his sword and went to war

Until I saw that my fellow soldiers didn’t know what for

So I laid down my arms and stood aside

But before I got home every piece of me died

I’m still alive but these scars are all that’s mine

And it’s not right

How it tears me up inside

But if you can’t love your enemies

You will never end this fight

So I dug my trenches

And lived behind safe doors

But at home I found just another version of the wars

Yeah, people on both sides of all these issues

Are making some sense to me

And though these days I’m more disarming than crossing swords

Sometimes I’m still the stubborn side of me

And I will fight

With those who only know their side

Because if you can love your enemies

There’s no more pretend divide

These lives we’ve taken trying to reach

Blinded by our hostility
